Where is Ruby on Rails used?
Ruby is a programming language “with a focus on simplicity and productivity. It has an elegant syntax that is natural to read and easy to write.”[1] Rails is a web application framework written in Ruby, and was first developed in 2004 by David Heinemeier Hansson. It is open source and has thousands of contributors who have helped enhance the platform significantly over the last two decades, adding functionality, enhancing the platform and fixing bugs.
The Ruby on Rails framework is used by numerous organisations to create everything from relatively simple sites to internationally recognisable platforms like Airbnb. The framework simplifies common repetitive tasks by giving developers pre-defined solutions to certain issues, helping to increase the speed at which new applications can be developed and therefore delivered to an online audience.
Ruby on Rails is one of the top 10 most in-demand web development frameworks in 2021[2] (alongside React and Django), and one of the main reasons for this is that it is ideal for making integrated systems – a concept that forms one of the key pillars of the Ruby on Rails doctrine:
“Rails can be used in many contexts, but its first love is the making of integrated systems… A whole system that addresses an entire problem. This means Rails is concerned with everything from the front-end JavaScript needed to make live updates to how the database is migrated from one version to another in production.”[3]
